Passiflore

Page history last edited by Dylan 16 years ago

In a shady corner of Beechwood Grove live a family of seven rabbits called the Bellflower Bunnies. The family consists of Papa Bramble, Aunt Zinnia, and their five children: Periwinkle, Poppy, Mistletoe, Dandelion and Violette.

Since 1987, the bunnies have appeared in a locally popular series of children's books, entitled La Famille Passiflore in its native France. The books were the brainchild of author Geneviève Huriet (b. 1927), who had previously written L'oiseau à lunettes et le perroquet in 1984. The series has been published in France by Éditions Milan.

Except for the two most recent titles, Qu'as-tu fait, Mistouflet ? and L'album photo des Passiflore by Amélie Sarn, Huriet has written the entire series. Loïc Jouannigot (b. 1953), a native of Bretagne, has served as the stories' illustrator since their debut.

In 1991 and 1992, La Famille Passiflore was imported to the United States as Beechwood Bunny Tales, courtesy of Gareth Stevens Publishers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Only the first seven stories, from Periwinkle at the Full Moon Ball to Family Moving Day, ever saw English translation.

Back in Europe, however, Passiflore's catalogue has grown to over thirty titles; 750,000 copies of the series have been sold in its native France alone.

Its ongoing popularity led to an animated series that premiered on the TF1 network on the morning of December 24, 2001. Fifty-two episodes have been produced so far, of which 40 have aired.

This will become an ongoing tribute to a cute, sweet and often-overlooked franchise. The site owner will update it as often as possible.
